How to Make an Instagram Reel

    Whether you are already an avid TikTok user or you’ve stuck to Instagram, it’s time to check out the newly released Reels. This video format allows you to edit footage into little stories with added music, effects, and overlays. While it’s similar to TikTok, the creation process is a little bit different. We’re here to walk you through it.

    *Unfortunately, if you're a business account, you will not be able to use the music feature of Reels. We're bummed too!

    • Start an Instagram Story
      Click on the plus symbol on your profile picture.

    • Find Reels Option
      On the Story page you have 3 options: live, story, reels. Pick Reels.

    • Choose Your Sound
      Press the music note symbol and search for the song you want.

      Choose the section of song you’d like to use.
      (You aren’t required to choose a song, you can use your own audio, too.
      Do what works for your intended message.)

    • Pick Videos
      In Reels, you can either press the record button at the bottom of the screen or add past footage. For this example, we use stored videos. During this time you can edit the length of each clip you choose.

      *Warning: once you add your clips, you can only edit the last one you added. If you want to fix others, you have to delete the videos after it. This is a thing TikTok gets brownie points for. In their video editing, you can edit all clips at any time. 

     

    • Edit Footage
      After you’ve chosen a clip, you can edit your Reel. You can speed up or slow down videos or add effects.

    The exciting thing about Effects is that anybody can create them. That means people following you will see your effect pop up when they click on Effects. 

     

    • Post
      You can post reels or add them to your story. Either way, use the post copy to add to your story and use relevant hashtags to get discovered.
